Concerning your balaclava, did you ever see Elizabeth Zimmermann's suggestion for one? Just knit a ribbed hat, pull it over your face, pinch a couple of stitches at the very top of your nose. Take the hat off (holding on to the pinched section) clip one stitch, unravel each way several stitches and then put them on your needle and cast off. It works!
